Orange County Aggie Moms Meeting

The Orange County Aggie Moms will meet at 6:30 p.m., Monday, Jan. 14 in the Salvation Army dining hall at 1950 North MLK at the corner of MLK and Strickland. Lou Reeves, district meeting chairperson, will speak about details concerning the meeting in Orange on Feb. 16. All Aggie Moms are encouraged to attend. Applications are being taken for the Book Scholarship program which will be awarded during May. Scholarships can be used only for the purchase of books and school supplies at the Traditions Book Store in College Station. Entry forms and eligibility requirements are available at the monthly meetings. The meeting in May is the deadline for applications.

Wednesday Night Live at FUMC

Jan. 9, Wednesday Night Live at First United Methodist Church, 502 N. 6th St., resumes. A light dinner is served from 5-6 p.m. and classes begin at 6:00 p.m. Classes offerings are "The Death and Resurrection of the Messiah", A Shangri La Series presented by the staff of Shangri La, Max Lucado's 3:16, "What's So Amazing About Grace?" by Phillip Yancey, "Shepherding a Child's Heart", Parable & Proverbs, and children and youth studies. Golden K Kiwanis meet

To start off the new year, Beth Rach of Mike Hamilton's office, will speak to the Golden K Kiwanis Club at 10:00 a.m.on Wednesday, Jan. 9, at Sunset Grove Country Club. A brunch will be served at 9:30. Golden K welcomes and encourages retired seniors who are looking for a service club geared to their age group to attend as their guests. Orange County Relay for Life will hold kick-off event

Orange County’s Relay for Life will hold a kick-off event on Thursday, Jan. 10. Information regarding the May 2008 "Super Hero’s Conquering Cancer"event will be shared.The kick-off will be held at Robert’s Steakhouse, 3720 W. Park Avenue, in Orange. It will begin at 6 p.m.

All individuals interested in participating in the American Cancer Society fundraiser event are encouraged to attend.

Election year kick-off for Orange County Democrats

The Orange County Democratic Party will be having its monthly meeting at 6:30 p.m. Jan. 8th. The meeting will be held at, the "Marsh Mansion", on Dupont Drive. Follow the signs to join fellow Democrats in kicking off the 2008 Election Year.


Senior Citizens meet

The Orange County Senior Citizens will have their regular meeting at 10 a.m., Tues., Jan. 15. The meeting will be at the Salvation Army Bldg. on MLK. The new officers will be installed. They are: Pres., Marilou Gunn, Vice Pres., Juanita Schlicher, Secretary, Pauli Olson, and Treas., Catharine LeBlanc.

At this meeting, yearly dues are to be paid. Also, everyone is to bring a covered dish for the noon meal as well as prizes for bingo. Soaps will be collected for Orange Christian Services.

LU registration for Spring 2008 continues

Potential students still have time to make a New Year’s resolution to get a good education in 2008. Registration for spring semester classes at Lamar University will continue through mid-January.


Classes begin Jan. 11.

Regular registration for Spring 2008 continues at http://www.lamar.edu through Wednesday. For students who cannot register online, on-site registration is 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Jan. 10 in the Wimberly Building, Room 102.

Registration will continue after classes start, but a late registration fee will be assessed.

Students who have already registered must pay at least half the balance owed no later than Wednesday to avoid having classes dropped for non-payment. Payments may be made online, in person in the Wimberly Building, Room 114, or by mail to P.O. Box 10183, Beaumont TX 77710.

Informational meeting set for KVLU Spain trip

Spain will be the destination in September for the annual European tour hosted by KVLU, member-supported public radio at Lamar University. The 11-day trip departs on Sept.18, with scheduled stops in Madrid, Bilbao and Barcelona, plus other cities in Northern Spain located near the Pyrenees Mountains.

The tour, a Smithsonian Journeys Travel Adventure, will focus on historic sites, art, and architecture.

"This will be our third trip with Collette Vacations and our second as a Smithsonian Journeys Travel Adventure," said Melanie Dishman, KVLU station manager for advancement. "We’ll hear lectures on Spanish art history and the Basque culture of the region, plus see the modern art and architecture of such Spanish legends as Picasso, Gaudi and Dali."


To provide more information about the trip, KVLU has scheduled a meeting with station hosts and tour representatives from 3 to 5 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 24, in the lecture hall of the Art Museum of Southeast Texas, 500 Main St., in Beaumont. Anyone interested in taking part in this special tour is encouraged to attend the meeting to learn more details, said Dishman.

Travelers do not have to be members of KVLU to participate, she said.

Gospel Meeting at 9th & Elm

TAAS/TAKS March Exit Level Registration

Individuals who are no longer enrolled in school and who have not previously met minimum expectations on all sections of the TAAS or TAKS test, but who have met all other graduation requirements, may register to retake the necessary section(s).

The TEAMS test is no longer being administered. Examinees eligible for TEAMS will take the level reading and/or mathematics TAAS test(s). TEAMS examinees are not required to take the TAAS writing test. TAAS scores will be matched to the appropriate TEAMS passing standard.

Out-of-school retesters can register for the TAAS or TAKS retest by accessing the Texas Assessment website at http://k12testing.tx.ncspearson.com or by completing and submitting a paper registration form. Registration packets can be picked up at any high school campus, district central office of regional education service center. The appropriate registration form must be submitted online or returned in the preaddressed envelope and received in Austin no later than 5:00 p.m., Jan. 25.

Registration packets are being distributed by Bridge City High School. Please contact Bridge City High School, Conselor’s Office, at 735-1539.

The Texas Education Agency will not be responsible for registration forms that are delayed or lost in the mail. To insure that individuals are registered, forms should be sent by either registered or certified mail.

Orangefield Fire Station Ribbon Cutting

An Open House/ Ribbon Cutting will be held 11 a.m. - 2 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 12 at the Orangefield Fire Station located at 9540 FM 105 in Orangefield. ( next to K-Dans at the intersection of Hwy. 105 & Hwy. 408 )

The ribbon cutting is scheduled for noon.

Vidor to host free health fair

Vidor Independent School District Community Education will host their third annual free community-wide Health Fair from 10-2, Saturday, Jan. 12 at Vidor Middle School, 2500 Highway 12. The fair will feature more than fifty booths with information, a kids' fair where parents can leave their children as they visit the adult fair, and free screenings in cholesterol, blood sugar, blood pressure, body mass index, vision, and hearing. The fair is open to everyone. Vidor residence is not a requirement.

A 5K run and kids' run will take place before the fair, beginning at 9 am. To register for the runs or to obtain more fair information, call 409-951-8700. If calling before January 7th, leave a message and your call will be returned.

Project Orange ThumbSM Program Inspires Creative Expression

Since 2003, Fiskars has inspired and encouraged creative expression through gardening with Project Orange Thumb.

To promote sustainable agriculture, horticultural education, community involvement as well as neighborhood beautification, ten grants will be offered in 2008.

Community organizations, schools, gardening clubs, senior centers or other groups interested in fostering gardening within their community are invited to apply for Fiskars’ 2008 Project Orange Thumb Grant.

Awardees will receive up to $1,500 in Fiskars garden tools and $800 for plant materials to cultivate their garden vision.

Deadline for grant applications is Feb. 15, and winners will be announced March 15.
