Bridge City High School varsity volleyball coach Becca Matthews is conducting a summer volleyball camp this week through Thursday in the Bridge City Middle School gym.

The morning session is from 9 to 11:30 a.m. for students entering grades four, five and six. The afternoon session from 12:30 until 3 p.m. is those entering grades seven, eight, and nine. Fundamental and basic skills for competition are being taught on individual and team levels.

Admission is free for Bridge City district students and $40 for non-district members.

“We have room for all that would like to join the camp. The more we have the better it will be,” said Matthews. “It is not too late to enroll.”

Assisting Matthews is junior varsity coach Beth Larson, also the physicial education coach at Bridge City Intermediate. The two coaches are assisted by recent BCHS graduates Kayla Fullerton and Audree Myers, and BCHS student Emily Kosh. This fall, Fullerton plans to attend Wharton College and Myers, Galveston College.

“The two colleges will be playing each other. I guess I will have to have a shirt made with each college on it,” said Matthews. Kosh, an incoming junior, rounds out the team. This will be the second year for Kosh on the varsity team. All three of the students are assisting with the camp out of their love for the sport and the willingness to help by sharing their skills with others. The 2007-08 varsity volleyball team advanced to the regional finals this past season.

Students attending the camps can learn the basics that give them the foundation to keep the volleyball program in contention for state competition.
