They’ve scored about every way possible this season, but Saturday night they returned to good old hard-nosed football, with an excellent running game, a balanced passing game and a defense that never quits.

The Mustangs were able to take down Coldsprings, just like they did last year, in the third quarter. Leading just 14-8 at the half, WO-S came out with a “new attitude” and scored twice to up the margin to 29-8 in the middle of the third quarter.

The Mustangs hit pay dirt one more time with less than a minute left when senior Quintavius Garrett busted through the Coldspring defense and ran for 53 yards to put the final score at 36-8.

WO-S will now face the Caldwell Hornets, who are 6-3, in the second round on Friday night at Woodforest Stadium in The Woodlands, with a 7:30 pm kick-off time.

Coldsprings was the first to score, taking the ball down the field 71 yards on only five plays as the Trojans went up 8-0 at the end of the first quarter. However, that would be the end of the scoring for the Trojans. Although they got close to the end zone a couple of other times, the Chain Gang defense held tough especially in the second half. Coldspring was held to just 39 yards after the half.

“Coldsprings was a much better team than we saw last year,” Head Coach Dan Hooks said. “They lost one player and basically, everyone else was the same. They really played hard the first quarter.”

The Mustangs returned the favor, by getting on the board in just eight plays. Quarterback Ortavious Hypolite used his passing game and the hands of Trey Franks to put 6 on the board, as Franks caught a nice 30-yard pass down the right sideline and then scored on a 15-yarder on the right side of the end zone.

On their next drive the Mustangs used the running game, as Garrett had his first score of the night, a two-yard punch up the middle.

Hypolite carried the ball in for the two-point conversion and WO-S went ahead for the game, with about six minutes left until the half. Coldsprings attempted to answer back but were stopped short on fourth down as the clock ran out for the half.

The Trojans never recovered as Garrett scored again on a 37 yard run and Hypolite hit receiver James Haynes on a short pass that he took 24 yards to the end zone. Hypolite’s pass to Roderick Simmons was good for the two-point conversion after Garrett scored and kicker Justin Sparrow hit his first try of the night after Haynes’ score.

Garrett then finished off the scoring and Sparrow hit the extra point as the Mustangs gave Hooks his 260th win, 36-8.

“Quinny (Garrett) had a good game with about 153 yards and Hypolite completed 10 of 13 passes,” Hooks said. “The offensive line provided good protection so they could do their job and the defense corrected at the half.”

Up next for the Mustangs is a team that they have never faced before. Caldwell is more of a running team. They average 485 yards of total offense a game, with most of that coming on the ground.

The Hornets “go to guys” are junior running backs Kysan Woolverton and Nelson Scott, who both have over 1000 yards on the season. The top defensive player is senior Eli Gage.

“We know what they do and we will just have to stop the run,” Hooks said. “We’ll continue to practice like we have every week and hopefully, come away with another win.”

The Mustangs will again be the visiting team. Tickets for the game are $6 for adults and $4 for students, with all tickets at the gate $7.
