The Art of Texas Exemplified in One Huge Painting

Last updated 5/8/2009 at Noon

What is 8’ tall, 48’wide, took 3 years and 7 months and 25,297 participants in the making, and was officially unveiled in the state capital’s rotunda in Austin. It’s “A Little Dab of Texas”, a world record holding painting coordinated by artist, Jim Campbell of Ingram. It will be on display at The Texas Arts and Crafts Fair in Kerrville this Memorial Day Weekend, May 23 – 25. This special exhibit will feature the painting along with the registry of the documented painters who ranged in age from 14 days to 92 years and interesting trivia about the painting’s creation as it journeyed across Texas.

Viewers will have the opportunity to paint on another smaller painting to get a feel for being part of the ‘bigger picture’. The artists who participated in the original painted spoke of a multitude of good feelings that the project instilled from camaraderie and inspiration to importance and accomplishment. A San Antonio teacher gave extra credit to her students for participating. Three people were able to paint, even though they were blind. The artist responsible for coordinating this outstanding achievement will be on-hand to visit with viewers about the project.

The painting will be one of many great things to see and do at the 38th Annual Texas Arts and Crafts Fair presented by Wells Fargo and produced by The Texas Arts and Crafts Educational Foundation. There will be fine arts and crafts exhibited by their creators, continuous music on two stages, an educational and fun children’s art activity area, a large art demonstration area, and great food.

Fair goers should plan on spending more than one day at the fair to enjoy all the entertainment and activities. The fair admission ticket is good for any or all the days of the fair, May 23 – 25, 2009. The fair is located in the beautiful River Star Arts and Event Park at 4000 Riverside Drive just off Hwy 27 in Kerrville. On May 22, 2009 the Twelfth Annual Wine and Beer Tasting, a special event sponsored by JM Lowe & Company will again kick-off the big weekend.
