Cardinals advance, Bears fall to Brenham

The Bridge City Cardinals are the last team standing to represent Orange County hometown baseball in the state playoffs.

The Card’s prevailed over the Orangefield Bobcats 2-1 in the  Class 3A Region III quarterfinal series over the weekend.

Bridge City will now take on Spring Hill later this week in the semifinal round and just two brackets out from the state tournament.

The Cardinals edged out the Bobcats in Game Three, 8-4.

The win closed out an exciting playoff duel that split the series 1-1 in Game One and Game Two on Friday.

Bridge City took the first round 5-1.

The Bobcats defeated the Cardinals 5-4 in Game Two.

Bridge City’s Caleb Kellogg got the win on the hill going 6 1/3 innings against the rock-em’ sock-’em Bobcats in the series finale Saturday.

Matt Hicks came in to close the show.

The Cardinals came out slugging as the top of the order went to work in the bottom of the first inning.


Joseph Robertson, Matt Hicks, Luke Rhodes and Kellogg combined for a 4-0 lead.

Bobcat center fielder Jace Statum’s solo homer in the third inning lit the board for Orangefield.

In the bottom of the frame Cardinal infielder Blake Hubbard put one over the right field fence putting the Cards up 5-1.

Bridge City scored two more run in the bottom of the fifth led by Hubbard with an infield single.

Anthony Cessac would drive Hubbard home with a RBi single.

Designated runner Michael Schrieber came in for Dylan Mulhollan and scored on an error to make it 7-1.

In the sixth inning the Cardinal tacked on another run when Hicks nailed a lead off single and stole his way to third.


He was driven home by Cessac for his second RBI single of the contest.

The Bobcats, howver, battled to the end.

In their last time at bat Statum drew a walk and scored on a Jacobs Felts RBI double to left center.

Jonathan DeRamus scored on an error and Felts made it 8-4 when Zach Peevey hit a RBI single.

Matt Hicks relieved Kellogg on the hill for the last two outs of the ball came.

In other hometown baseball action the Little Cypress-Mauriceville Bears (24-14) fell to the Brenham Cubs in two games in the Class 4A quarterfinal series.

The Brenham Cubs (28-3) downed the LCM Bears 6-1 in Game Two Saturday at Montgomery High School.


The Bears strung out nine innings of playoff action to break a 2-2 tie against the Cubs in Game One.

Brenham took it 3-2.

The UIL Class 3A State Baseball Championships will be held June 11-12 at UFCU Disch-Falk Field in Austin.
