The United Methodist Army, sometimes referred to as the UM Army, visits St. Paul Methodist Church this week for a mission camp in Bridge City through Saturday, June 19.

The camp consists of high school students and adults from youth groups around Texas with each participant giving a week of their time to provide free home repairs for low-income, elderly and disabled home owners in the community.

“We ask that you join us in welcoming them to our community and thanking them for their services,” said Bridge City Chamber of Commerce Director Angela Beck.

According to camp staff members, donations from participating churches and host communities allow the mission to continue. Donations of food and gift cards from local businesses are greatly appreciated.

Donations can also be made via the group’s Web site, http://www.umarmy.org. The UM Army was founded in Houston in 1979.

Typical repairs are to build wheelchair ramps, porches, steps, handrails; repairing doors, windows, window screens and screen doors; exterior repairs and painting; interior sheetrock repairs and painting; and yard work.

Camp workers do not do electrical, plumbing, roof replacement and third-story painting. Workers take time out each morning, lunch and evening for devotions and worship.

“They’re doing an outstanding job,” said St. Paul Pastor Brad Morgan. “One of the great things about United Methodist Outreach Teams is that it’s awesome to experience these young people in service to the Lord.”

About 13 teams are broken down into groups of one to five youths and one/two adults. There are about eight present work projects in Bridge City, some six/seven in Orange and about eight in Port Arthur.

Very little work is being done at St. Paul since it is a new church.

“We are delighted and thrilled to have these young people here and to see what they are doing for the community,” Morgan said.
