The Lamar University men’s and women’s cross country teams will compete in their second race of the year when they take part in the Rice Invitational in Houston on Friday.

The 4K women’s race is set for 6:45 p.m., with the 5K men’s race getting under way at 7:05 p.m. Both events will be held on Rice’s intramural fields.

The Lamar men are coming off an impressive victory in their first meet of the season, capturing the Johnny Morriss Invitational at the University of Houston on Sept. 3. Lamar’s Tallum Kipruto was the top finisher in that race, covering the 4,750-meter course in 14 minutes, 46.25 seconds. The Cardinals had all five of their runners in the top 16.

The LU women finished third. Lamar was led by freshman Katrine Vaesel, who was sixth in 11:34.08 for 3,133 meters.

“We’re looking to have another strong race,” cross country coach Jake Stewart said. “Our main focus is getting ready for the season ahead and being ready for the Southland Conference meet and the regionals.”

Following Friday’s race, Lamar will be idle until Oct. 2 when it competes in the Charles Bowles Invitational in Salem, Ore.
