The Mustangs may not have any control over the situations that keep occurring but the Chain Gang definitely had control over the Bridge City offense as they posted their second shut-out of the season, beating the Cardinals, 28-0.

Unfortunately for the Mustangs, Coach Mark Foreman had to watch the game from his home after suffering an illness that landed him in ICU for several days last week. However, the defensive backs that he coaches rocked right along, stifling the Bridge City receivers by only allowing quarterback Matt Menard to complete 4 of 21 passes for 39 yards, with the last 13 falling incomplete.

“Going into the game, I knew that they (Bridge City) would come to play and they would put up a fight,” senior Donovan Rubin, who is a starter on defense, said. “Our whole team was focused and everyone did their assignment and we were able to come away with a shut-out.”

Although the Mustangs didn’t get on the board until the first play in the second quarter, they dominated from the opening kick-off. Running back Darius Mitchell carried the offense on his feet for 165 yards on 15 carries, but wasn’t able to come away with a touchdown.

Quarterback Jimmy Salter took the honors for the first touchdown after Mitchell carried the ball down inside the 10-yard line. Kicker Bryce Crew’s PAT was good, along with the other three, making him 4 for 4 for the night and putting the score at 7-0.

The defense held the Cardinals, returning the ball to the Mustang offense and this time, junior Britton Lindsey did the honors on a 10-yard run around the end, putting the Mustangs up, 14-0, to end the half.

“Our defense was outstanding,” Head Coach Dan Hooks said. “This was one of our better performances with the offense also moving the ball well. Overall, when we made mistakes, we bowed up and didn’t let Bridge City score.”

One of the mistakes was a Salter pass that was picked off by Bridge City receiver Tyler Roberts. However, the defense held strong and the ball went over on downs late in the third quarter. The Mustangs then took the ball over 80 yards and scored as running back Darius Robinson carried the ball 21-yards to put the game out of reach.

The Cardinal offense never gave up as BC’s Hunter Clark was able to break away from the Chain Gang on a 48 yard run. However, the Mustangs were stingy again, forcing the ball over on downs.

Late in the fourth quarter, punter Mark Roberts headed to the field to do something he hadn’t had to do all night-punt. But Roberts had other things in mind as he bolted for a 22-yard fake punt and a first down. Salter then used Roberts to finish the game as he hit him with a short pass that ended in a 26-yard touchdown.

The Mustangs now sit atop 21-3A with a 3-0 district record, but they know that they can’t celebrate yet because the Silsbee Tigers are coming to town. The Tigers, who are 2-1 in district, pulled out a 30-20 win over the Hardin Jefferson Hawks late in the game this past Friday.

“Silsbee struggled against HJ, but they will correct it before they get here Friday night,” Hooks said. “They are up against a wall as far as the play-offs go and they don’t need to lose, just like we don’t.”

Silsbee’s skill people begin with quarterback Kelson McDaniel, who runs a spread offense and is a good runner and passer. His “go to guys” when he throws the ball are Kelton Gaines, Prentice Lane and Darrian Turk. Running back Jarrian Rhone is whose legs he uses when not using his own.

“They are very athletic and have some talented skill people,” Hooks said. “The defense has been hot and cold at times, but they know that they have to win this one.”

The Mustangs will honor their seniors before the game gets started Friday night, beginning around 7 pm. The sub varsity teams hope to set the tone on Thursday night when they will also face Silsbee. The middle school teams will play at home on the middle school campus while the ninth and JV teams will travel to Silsbee with a start time of 5 pm.

Four out of five sub varsity teams were successful against Bridge City on Friday night. The 7th grade barely pulled it out, winning 28-26, while neither 8th grade team had trouble with the B team winning, 38-0 and the A team winning, 31-0.

The JV also won, 44-6.

Ar”Tevin McDonald scored on a 26-yard fumble return and Abear Simien took the two point conversion in.

Simien struck again on a 37-yard run and quarterback Tremaine Anderson’s pass to Larry Sonnier was good for the two point conversion.

McDonald struck again on a 57-yard run and the extra point was no good.

Anderson again passed to Sonnier for a 16-yard touchdown and then hit Rashon McDonald for the two point conversion.

After taking an extremely hard hit, Quinton Tezeno showed how tough he is and caught a short pass across the middle, taking it 72 yards for the touchdown.

He then caught the two point conversion.

McDonald closed out the scoring when he ran 72 yards for the final points.

Offensive standouts were Tezeno, Simien, McDonald and Anderson while defensive standouts were Austin Rutledge, Aaron Ray, Elvis Hubert, Larry McDonald, Perry Spikes.

The ninth grade lost, 28-14, with John Scott scoring on a nine yard run and DeWayne Boullard catching a 14 yard pass from Eric Guillory. Guillory also scored on a two point conversion. Two Bridge City freshmen that have ties to WO-S had an outstanding game-Colby Trahan and Ashton Hunter.
