WOS students win campus reading contest

Sarah Ragsdale and Shaquille Rhodes each won $2000 scholarships and campus titles in the West Orange – Stark High School finals of the 107th Miriam Lutcher Stark Contest in Reading and Declamation held Sunday, Feb. 13 at the Carl Godwin Auditorium.

Ragsdale took first place honors in Interpretive readings with her reading of “The Widow and the Parrot” by Virginia Woolf. Alayna Jacobs placed second with her reading of Saki’s “The Open Window.” Jacobs earned a $1500 scholarship for placing second in Interpretive Reading.

Rhodes won first place in Declamations for her presentation of the “1976 Democratic National Convention Keynote” by Barbara Jordan. Jada Simien placed second for “The Crisis” by Carne Champman Catt. She also earned a $1500 scholarship for placing second in Declamation.

Other WO-S finalists in the contest were, Darylyn Pollard, Brittney Perry, Danielle Drouillard, Kayla Block, Devin Hebert, and Brittany Hagan.

Ragsdale and Rhodes now advance to the Orange County Finals of the Miriam Lutcher Stark Reading Contest to be held April 24.

The West Orange – Stark High School Contest was presented by the West Orange –Stark High School English Department. Marvin Hill and Ken Wernig are the Contest Directors.

The contest is sponsored by the Nelda C. and H. J. Lutcher Stark Foundation.
