Orange Oil Centennial huge success

Last updated 8/21/2013 at Noon

Saturday, the replica derrick blew at the dedication of the historical marker and again at 8:05 p.m., the time Bland number one spewed oil for the first time in the Orange Oil Field a century ago.

Water was pumped through the derrick to simulate the oil gushing forth at the oil centennial Saturday

A large crowd was on hand to witness water shooting three times the height of the derrick. The feat was achieved with the help of the Bridge City Fire Department and a pumper truck.

Kids played in the water, squealing with delight.

Also on hand to entertain the crowd were the bands ‘Fire and Rain’ and ‘BB and Company’ featuring Britt Godwin and Bubba More.

Patrons feasted on barbecue dinners underneath a huge white tent or in the Rose Thayer Dance Academy.

There were water activities to keep the kids cool, old fashioned shoot-outs by the Big Thicket Outlaws and quilting demonstrations inside the museum.

The day was finished off with magnificent fireworks.

Organizers were very pleased with the turnout. The exact number in attendance was unknown, but they feel it did exceed their 1,000 person goal.
