OC Farmers’ Market waiting on fall gardens

This week at the Orange County Farmers’ Market you are likely to find watermelon, okra, multiplying onions, and muscadine grapes, as well as a large variety of yard plants and house plants, homemade baked goods and homemade granola.

The jams, jellies, and pickles will be back in September.

There will soon be a larger variety of fresh produce to choose from.

Some Fall gardens will be ready earlier than others, so stop by the farmers’ market often to see what’s available.

Are you a gardener and want to make some extra cash? Just bring your fresh produce to the Orange County Farmers’ Market.

FBC of Orangefield to host DVD Bible study

First Baptist Church of Orangefield, located at 9788 Hwy. 105, invites you to be a part of a DVD Bible Study beginning at 6:30 p.m. Sunday Sept. 1.

“It Could Happen Tomorrow…Understanding Future Events that will Shape the World” is an eight week Bible Study covering the book of Revelation, and is lead by Dr. Gary Frazier. As one of America’s most highly respected speakers on Bible prophecy, Dr. Frazier has traveled to Israel over 150 times, teaching and lecturing, and is the founder and president of Discovery Missions International.

This Bible Study will continue through October beginning at 6:30 p.m. each Sunday night, and is open to all who wish to attend. A nursery will be provided during the services. First UMC to host Tuesday morning Bible Study

First United Methodist will begin their Tuesday morning Bible study from 10 a.m. to noon beginning Tuesday, Sept. 10 in their education building. The facilitators will be Carol Allen and Christy Day. Five faith lessons concerning the early church and its task of spreading the message of Jesus Christ to the world dominated by Rome will be taught. All are welcome. Starlight COGIC to host Family Conference

Starlight Church of God in Christ, located at 2800 Bob Hall Rd in Orange, will host Family Conference 2013. The conference will be held from Sept. 26-29. Early Bird registration is $30 and $35 after Aug. 30.

The theme for the conference is “Restoring all the treasures of the family.” On Thursday night, at 7:30 p.m., the Guest Evangelist is Evangelist Beverly Crawford. On Friday night, at 8 p.m., the Guest Speaker is Pastor L.D. Lee and Musical Guest, Ron Hall & Company. On Saturday, the Guest Speaker for the Treasure Luncheon will be Pastor Anthony Thomas. Sunday will culminate with Family and Friends Day at 11 a.m. with Evangelist Josie Lindsey as Speaker.

Family Power Sessions will be held from 6:45 to 7:45 p.m. on Friday night and a Family Symposium at 9 a.m. on Saturday morning.

St. Paul UMC selling bricks for Prayer Garden

St. Paul United Methodist Church is continuing plans for its Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow Prayer Garden by paving the garden with a brick walkway. The church is selling bricks that will be engraved with a personal note of the buyer’s choice. These bricks would provide a special way honor family and friends with a history at St. Paul’s. Chevron Retirees Assoc. to meet Oct. 14

Retirees of Chevron, Texaco and Unocal, please note. The normally scheduled September meeting of the Chevron Retirees Association has been rescheduled to Monday, Oct. 14. A notice of the meeting will be posted as the new date approaches.

Orange VFW to host recognition programs

Orange VFW Post 2775, located at the VFW hall on Hwy 87 North (5303 N. 16th Street), will present three Veterans Recognition Programs. Operation Iraqi Freedom will be held at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 30; Victory over Japan will be held at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 4; and Patriot’s Day will be held at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 11.

No meeting set for Orange P&Z Commission

The City of Orange Planning and Zoning Commission will not have their regularly scheduled meeting on Sept. 3, 2013, because no applications have been made.

American Legion to host plate lunch fundraiser

The American Legion Post 49, located at 108 Green Ave in Orange, will host a plate lunch fundraiser from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 5. Cost is $8 per plate and the meal will consist of brisket, link, potato salad, beans, bread and dessert. Walk-in’s are welcome and delivery is available. Lutcher Theater Service guild to meet Sept. 5

BCHS Classes 76-78 to host reunion

Bridge City High School classes of 1976, 1977, 1978 are planning a reunion from 6:30 to 11 p.m. Sept. 7, at the Bridge City Community Center. Price is $30 for individual or couple. OC Retired Teachers to meet Sept. 9

The Orange County Retired Teachers Association will begin their fall meetings on at 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 9, at the Wesley United Methodist Church, located at 401 37th Street in Orange. There will be a business meeting, bringing everyone up to date on the latest information from TRTA. The speaker will be Mike Louiviere, a local writer. Mike is an Orange graduate who has provided articles of local interest in the County Record and the Orange Leader. A light lunch will be served.

Buckner to host foster care, adoption interest meeting

Buckner Children and Family Services will present a FREE foster care and adoption information meeting at 5:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 9 at Buckner Children’s Village, 9055 Manion Drive.

A Buckner representative will give an overview of foster care and adoption options in Texas, including foster-to-adopt, Waiting Texas Children and domestic infant adoption programs. International adoption options, through Buckner’s affiliate Dillon International, will also be discussed. LCM CISD Dyslexia/504 Program meeting set for Sept. 19

Two meetings will be held at the Little Cypress-Mauriceville CISD Education Center (at the Special Programs building on the corner of MLK and FM 1130) to provide parent training on the characteristics of dyslexia and Section 504 eligibility criteria. Information provided will include: awareness of characteristics of dyslexia and related disorders; information on testing and diagnosis of dyslexia; information on effective strategies for teaching dyslexic students; and awareness of information on modification, especially modifications allowed on standardized testing.

Parents are encouraged to attend either the 10 a.m. meeting or the 5:30 p.m. meeting on Thursday, Sept. 19.

Orange Peel Out Car Club to host car show

Orange Peel Out Car Club will host their fifth annual Open Car Show from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 21 at Granger Chevrolet, located at 2611 MacArthur Drive in Orange.

Entry fee is $20 in advance and $25 the day of the show. Entrants will receive a free t-shirt and dash plaque.

This is an Open show so you don’t have to be a Classic or Antique to enter. Trophies will be awarded in various categories.

There will be great music, good food, lots of door prizes, several special drawings, split the pot, cool people and of course many fine vehicles! Admission is free to the public.

All proceeds benefit local charity so we want to have a big turnout!

Hunter Education Safety class set for Sept. 22

The Texas Parks and Wildlife Hunter Education Home Study Safety Class field part will be taught from 1:30 to 5:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 22. The online home study must be complete, printed out and brought to class. This class is not just for hunters but for anyone who handles a firearm can benefit from it. LCM classes of ‘70-’76 to host reunion

The Little Cypress-Mauriceville Classes of 1970-1976 are planning a reunion, with the Class of 1973 hosting the plans since it will be their 40th Class Reunion, on Sept. 27-28.

Activities include a tailgating party before the LCM HS football game from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 27 at Bear Park (LCM HS Football Parking Lot), and attending the football game afterwards.

On Saturday, Sept. 28, a reception with snacks/appetizers/non-alcoholic beverages/set-ups will begin at 6:30 p.m. at the Ramada Inn, 2610 Lutcher Dr. in Orange with music and dancing to follow at 7:30 p.m. BYOB if you prefer alcoholic beverages. Music will be provided by Jimmy Jams and the cost is $35 for couples and $20 for singles. LCHS reunion for classes of 1953-1970 set

The Little Cypress High School Graduating Classes of 1953 to 1970 have scheduled a reunion for Oct. 5. Reunion events will include an LC Alumni Reception, dinner and dance at the VFW Post 2775 Hall Ballroom at 5303 16th St. (Highway 87) in Orange.

The LC Friends’ Reception, with snacks, appetizers and drinks provided, will be from 2 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Dinner is at 6 p.m. with Music and Dancing from 7:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m.

A fee of $35 per person includes appetizers, drinks, dinner and dance, although all teachers, administrators and coaches attend free. Checks for $35 per person should be made payable to and mailed to Kenneth Lewis, 595 Orleans St., Ste. 500, Beaumont, Texas 77701.

OISD football Senior Citizen passes available

Dr. Stephen Patterson, Orangefield ISD Superintendent, has announced that residents of Orangefield who are 60 years of age and older qualify for a Senior Citizens Pass. The OISD school board approved these passes in 1993 and it entitles senior citizens to free admission to home activities and events sponsored by the Orangefield Independent School District.

Residents wishing to obtain these passes should go to the superintendent’s office, located in the administration building between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Proof of age and residence will be required for all Senior Citizens Pass requests.

Eagles to host pool tourney

The Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 2523, located at 803 N. 28th Street in Orange, will host a pool tournament each Friday beginning at 8 p.m. The two tables are open Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday nights. Popcorn will be served and a drink special will be offered until 11 p.m. The community is invited to come meet the members of Aerie 2523 and join in the fun.

OC Master Gardeners monthly meeting

The monthly meeting of the Orange County Master Gardeners is held at 6 p.m. the second Thursday of the month at the Salvation Army building on the corner of MLK and Strickland in Orange. A potluck supper and the business meeting will be held first or program will start at 6:30 p.m. They will have a program on hydroponics in July. Door prizes will be drawn at the end of each meeting. OF Athletic Department creating Wall of Honor

The Orangefield Athletic Department is developing a “Wall of Honor” for those athletes who have either been named All-State or have gone on to play at the next level.

Much of the Orangefield Bobcat memorabilia was lost in a fire in the early 1990’s. An effort is being made to rebuild the collection. The athletic department is requesting an 8x10 photo and the year of recognition. Donations to the “Wall of Honor” may be dropped off at the field house between 8 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. The boy athlete photos will be hung in the field house and the girls pictures will be hung in the new gym.

The Orangefield Athletic Department is asking for the community’s help to rebuild this “Wall of Honor” that will celebrate the accomplishments of their athletes, past and present. For any questions, please call the field house at 735-4504 or email [email protected].

KOCB sells Litter Button banners

Keep Orange County Beautiful hopes to sell 50 banners to local businesses for $25 each promoting their “Litter Button” on their Website: http://www.kocb.org. Their hope is that each banner will generate 10 hits of the “Litter Button,” which would mean 500 litterers in the State of Texas would be notified by the Texas Department of Transportation of their illegal activity.

If you see someone littering, take down the time, date and place of the littering and the license plate of the vehicle. Report the activity by going to http://www.kocb.org and hit the litter button. Fill in the information which is then sent to TxDOT.

The offending litterer will be sent a letter reminding them it is illegal to litter in the State of Texas. They will also receive a litter bag for their car and a Don’t Mess With Texas sticker.

Boy Scouts to host annual flag fundraiser

The Boy Scouts of Troop 62 is now accepting subscriptions for commemorative flag displays in and around North Orange (near Hwy. 87 and Meeks Drive) between IH-10 and South Teal Road. The 3’ by 5’ flags will be displayed on the five flag days of the year (Memorial Day, Flag Day, Fourth of July, Patriots Day [9/11] and Veterans Day). The flags will be displayed no later than 9 a.m. on the commemorative day, picked up before dusk and stored until the next flag day.

An initial $75 tax deductible donation ($50 for renewals) is required. Money orders and checks must be received 14 days prior to posting day in order to ensure timely service. All proceeds go to support Scout activities and programs throughout the year.

Orange Community Band to meet every Thursday

The Orange Community Band rehearses every Thursday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the National Guard Armory, located at 4103 Meeks Drive in Orange. They are in need of players for the following sections; flute, clarinet, saxophone, French horn, and percussion, but ALL are welcome! The band performs Christmas, Memorial Day, Independence Day and Veteran’s Day concerts. At least one traditional band concert is performed annually.
