Four bronze sculptures by Philip R. Goodwin will go on view Tuesday, October 29­, at the Stark Museum of Art, located at 712 Green Avenue. These recent acquisitions; Sitting Bear, Mountain Lion, Lynx, and Walking Bear, are gifts of Larry David given in memory of Charles B. David.

Philip R. Goodwin (1881-1935) developed a career as a talented painter and illustrator of wildlife and hunting scenes. He modeled four animal sculptures in wax about 1909 after visiting with noted western artist Charles M. Russell in Montana. Goodwin kept the models in his studio, but did not cast them in bronze. The sculptures remained unknown until a Goodwin relative discovered them in the artist's estate holdings and had them cast in a bronze edition about 1978. Charles B. David acquired a set from that edition; then they descended to Larry David who made the donation.

"These are the first works of art by Goodwin himself that have been acquired for the Stark Museum of Art," said Sarah Boehme, Curator. "We are very pleased to have them because he is an important artist, and these sculptures expand our story of the depiction of wildlife in the West."

Goodwin's bronzes are small in size because he was shaping the wax directly with his hands, yet the bronzes reveal the artist's ability to portray animal anatomy and behavior naturalistically. The Museum has works of art associated with Goodwin, such as sketches by Charles M. Russell that depict Goodwin, as well as several illustrated letters written to Goodwin by Russell.

The four sculptures, with a backdrop of photographs of Goodwin and Russell, will go on view in a case adjacent to Charles M. Russell sculptures. The photographs of the artists are courtesy of the C.M. Russell Museum, Great Falls, Montana.

Larry David is a member of the Board of Directors of the Nelda C. and H.J. Lutcher Stark Foundation, which owns and operates the Stark Museum of Art.

Larry David's gift was made in memory of his uncle Charles B. David, a native of Orange, who lived in Alpine, TX. for the last 30 years of his life. Charles B. David (1923-2012) served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was retired from Houston Natural Gas.
