Lamar football team to honor nation’s heroes

Last updated 9/12/2014 at Noon

Just two days after Americans paused to remember the tragic events of Sept. 11, 2001, and honor our fallen heroes, Lamar’s football team will take time to do the same during Saturday’s game against Texas College at Provost Umphrey Stadium.

All members of the military, and first responders will receive free admission to Saturday’s contest with proper identification, or by arriving in official uniform. The military and first responders will also help form the tunnel and help lead the Cardinals onto the field prior to kick off.

Throughout the contest – which is sponsored by MCT, Lamar will be selling camouflage caps to help raise funds for the Wounded Warrior Project. The caps cost $20 and all proceeds go to the Wound Warrior Project.

MCT will also be handing out rally towels to the first 1,000 fans. The first 400 fans that arrive at Gates 1 and 2 will receive a free bandana beginning at 5:00 p.m., while the first 100 students will receive a voucher for their bandana at the student tailgate area.

Big Red and Lu invite children to come hang out with them at the Kids Zone from 4:30 – 6:30 p.m. Bounce houses will once again be supplied by Mid-County Party Supply.

The Cardinals will begin the Walk of Champions into Provost Umphrey Stadium beginning at 4:30, but will add a new twist to Saturday’s walk. Head coach Ray Woodard and his team will be escorted by motorcycles. The motorcycle riders will also join the military and first responders on the field to help form the tunnel leading the players onto the field.

The James Blackshear Band will once again be in concert underneath the marquee at the A5 parking lot. The concert will begin at 5:00 p.m. and will run until approximately 30 minutes before kick.

In addition to the giveaways prior to the game, fans will also have the opportunity to win a 50-inch LED Vizio Smart TV from Wal-Mart and a truck from Classic Chevrolet. The registration for the TV and vehicle from Classic Chevrolet will take place at the student rewards booth inside Gate 2. Registration will shut down at the end of the 1st quarter.

In addition, the first 600 students can register to win a vehicle from Classic Chevrolet in the 5th Quarter promotion following the game.

At halftime of Saturday’s game against Texas College, Lamar will be presenting the trophy for the winners of the Ladders vs. Badges Soccer game. The game will be played at halftime of Lamar’s Friday night soccer game against Texas Southern, and teams will consist of local fire fighters and police officers.

The Cardinals (1-1) are slated to kickoff Saturday at 7:00 p.m. from Provost Umphrey Stadium. Lamar is looking to bounce back from its setback at Texas A&M, while Texas College is looking for its first win of the year (0-2).
