Last updated 9/22/2014 at Noon

Lamar Institute of Technology will celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with an event from 10:00 a.m.-noon on Oct. 1 at the Multi-Purpose Center, Beaumont.

Guest speaker will be Jesus Abrego, Director of Hispanic Youth Programs with the Diocese of Beaumont.

Originally from Nuevo Leon, Mexico, Abrego became an American during a naturalization ceremony at the Jack Brooks Federal Building in Beaumont.

At the Diocese of Beaumont, he coordinates the pastoral needs of Catholic Hispanics and oversees the evangelization of the general Hispanic population and recent immigrants. His goal is to assist the Hispanic population in becoming self-sufficient leaders of tomorrow. Abrego has founded a Hispanic leadership training program for youth and young adults that has grown into a three-step certification process, mobilizing young people through ministry.

Abrego was a finalist for the 2012 Lumen Christi Award, which recognizes Catholic individuals across America who demonstrate how the power of faith can transform lives and communities.

Maggie Cano, Director of Recruitment at Lamar University, will emcee the event.

The Hispanic Heritage Society of Port Arthur Folkloric Dancers will also perform, as well as LIT alumna Yolanda Tomayo who will sing.

Food and drinks will be provided by Elena’s and Coca-Cola. The public is invited and admission is free. For more information, call (409) 880-2292.
