LU to select student commencement speakers

Lamar University is pleased to announce a new and exciting student opportunity. At every December and May university commencement ceremony only, a selected representative of the student body will deliver a commencement address to the graduating class. On Dec. 13, the first student commencement address will be delivered. The speaker's remarks will last approximately ten minutes and will focus on the general topic of the transformative experience of higher education. This speaking privilege will be recognized with an honorarium of $500.

To be eligible to deliver the student commencement address, the applicant must meet the following criteria.

The applicant must be a currently enrolled, full-time undergraduate or graduate student.

Preference will be given to members of the graduating class.

Undergraduate applicants must have completed at least 30 credit hours from Lamar University and graduate school applicants must have completed at least 15 credit hours.

At the end of the semester prior to the commencement, the undergraduate applicant must have a 3.50 or higher cumulative grade point average on all coursework (including repeated and transferred courses).

The graduate student applicant must have a 3.75 or higher cumulative grade point average on all graduate work.

The applicant must be in good disciplinary and financial standing with Lamar University.

The applicant must submit a completed application at by the deadline and, if selected as a finalist, must prepare a draft address and audition before a nomination committee.

The nomination committee, appointed by President Kenneth Evans, will review applications and remarks, judge auditions, interview candidates and make a recommendation to the president. The final selection will be made by the president. Applicants will be judged on the strength of their completed application packet, content of their address and audition. The completed application must be received by the senior associate provost in Office 104 of the Plummer Administration building no later than the close of business on the stated day.

For the Dec. 13 university commencement ceremony, applications are due by Monday, Oct. 13. For future December commencement ceremonies, the deadline will be the third Monday of October, and for future May Commencements the deadline will be the first Monday of March.
