Hoke speaks to retired teachers

Mike Hoke, representing the Friends of the Orange Depot, was guest speaker at the Orange County Retired Teachers Association meeting in September.

Anyone that has driven across the railroad tracks on Green Avenue and said “something should be done to preserve this depot” needs to join in the effort to do so. So many of our historic buildings have already been lost; we cannot afford to lose this important link to our history. “Friends of the Orange Depot” T-shirts are being sold along with bricks for a “Passenger Walk” engraved with the names of families and companies.

Despite all the community support, there is still a need for volunteers to serve on severalcommittees. Mike is asking Orange residents to contact former residents or classmates living out of the area to inform them of the plans for the depot.

This group has the following contact information: www.orangetxdepot.com, and also has a page on Facebook. Information can also be obtained at: [email protected].

The next meeting of Orange County Retired Teachers Association will be held Oct. 13 at our new start time of 10:30 at the Wesley United Methodist Church, 401 37th St. Our local unit is an affiliate of the Texas Retired Teachers Associate (TRTA). All who have retired from any county school position are invited to attend and become a member. All friends of public education are also invited to attend and become an associate member.

Guest speaker for October will be Scott Hasty of J Scotts Aflorist.
