CCS 5th graders studying states of matter

Last updated 2/3/2015 at Noon

Mrs. Dearing’s 5th grade students at Community Christian School are studying “states of matter” in Science. They experimented with dry ice to better understand “state changes.” Through discovery learning they were able to watch dry ice sublimate (when anything solid turns into a gas without first becoming a liquid).

Students eagerly observed the physical properties of the matter as they watched, interacted, and experimented with the dry ice as it went through the sublimation process. The experiments the students eagerly executed were: turning dry ice (a solid) into carbon dioxide (a gas), blow up a balloon, blow out a candle, make a quarter dance and make a spoon scream.
