The Bridge City Cardinals (2-0) and the West Orange Stark Mustangs (2-0) both knocked off Southeast Texas football powerhouses on Friday.

For the first time in 14 years the Bridge City Cardinals defeated the Newton Eagles 18-13 before a packed crowd in their home opener. Last week 'Big Red' defeated the top ranked Kirbyville Wildcats. In Week Two Bridge City took out No. 4 ranked Newton.

They are calling it the "Year of the Cardinal." And they way Bridge City is playing it will likely mark the beginning of a superb season.

Newton was dogged all night by the Bridge City defense that smother the Eagles in swarms. For the second straight week, middle linebacker Derick Dearing, forced a crucial fumble recovery. On Friday, Dearing nailed Newton's quarterback setting up Bridge City's second touchdown. The Cardinal defense held Newton scoreless the second half.

The Mustangs were doing the same against Class-5A Port Neches-Groves Indians. The much anticipated rumble at 'the Reservation' proved the Mustangs are the real deal. PNG was the predicted winner. The Mustangs beat the Indians 28-14 in PNG's home opener.

Also, here in Orange County, the Orangefield Bobcats (1-1) fell to the Kirbyville Wildcats 24-14 at F.L. McClain Stadium. The Little Cypress Mauriceville Battlin' Bears (0-2) lost to Barbers Hill 28-7.
