Fun and Educational Summer Camps

EcoRangers and Art Quest Summer Camps are designed to actively engage students during the summer months. All camps have a low student-to-teacher ratio, which enhances hands-on learning in all environments. Depending on the camp, students may explore a variety of ecosystems, study different critters, complete art projects, and engage in many hands-on activities and active games.

EcoRangers at Shangri La Gardens:

Shangri La School of Magic and Mystery (Grades 3 & 4)

July 5-8, 2016, 8:30 a.m. - 2:30 p.m.

Young wizards will have a full schedule of classes learning about herbology, care of magical creatures, potions, and even astronomy. Begin by learning about proper woods for wands, and end by saving Shangri La from dark forces seeking to destroy the Luminous Forest. This is a story-based camp that will engage children's imaginations.

Hidden Treasure at Shangri La (Grades 5 & 6)

July 12-15, 2016, 8:30 a.m. - 2:30 p.m.

Aargh, maties! Seeking to recruit the finest lot of swashbuckling pirates that can be found in these parts! The treasure of Shangri La is being threatened by the interloper Captain Stinkwater! During this week at the Gardens, salty pirates will learn about bayous, lakes, swamps, and all the plants and animals that depend on this precious water. Help conquer Captain Stinkwater and protect the hidden treasure. In the process, look to find some real treasure.

Nature Engineers(Grades 7, 8, & 9)

July 19-22, 2016, 8:30 a.m. - 2:30 p.m.

During this new offering, campers will observe nature, discover, design, engineer, and finally, build new creations based on the observations. Learn to use simple sketches and diagrams to plan inventions, and then use basic materials and tools to build them. Explore and attempt to recreate flight, the slithering nature of snakes, animal shelters, and so much more from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.Campers will spend 50-70% of the time outdoors observing, questioning, sketching, and building. Approximately 30-40% of the time will be spent indoors building, testing, and refining the inventions.

Knights of the Green Table (Grades 1 & 2)

July 26-29, 2016, 8:30 a.m. - 2:30 p.m.

Lords and Ladies! Knights and Princesses! Seeking help to protect the Royal Gardens of Shangri La from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The gardens are under attack by a dreadful villain, Sir Pollutesalot. During this week in the gardens, all royalty will learn about the different habitats, plants, and animals in the garden and how to forever protect them. Help conquer Sir Pollutesalot and protect the Royal Garden now and in the future!

Creative Color Chemists, in partnership with Stark Museum of Art (Grades 3 &4)

August 2-5, 2016, 8:30 a.m. - 2:30 p.m.

From rainbows and warning coloration to natural inks and color theory, this week students will become Creative Color Chemists! Explore the significance of science behind light, soil coloration, dye plants, leaves that change colors, and so much more from 8:30 a.m.

to 2:30 p.m.

Then create and mix pigments using berries, insects, soil and other natural materials.

Through hands-on investigations and projects, learn about the color wheel, cool and warm colors, and the importance of color choice in the fine art. Time will be split between Shangri La Gardens and Stark Museum of Art. Participants will spend approximately 50% of the time outdoors hiking, riding on the bayou, and exploring nature.

The other 50% of the time will be spent indoors working on science and projects.

Art Quest at Stark Museum of Art:

Engraving and Printing Teen Workshop (Grades 9, 10, 11 & 12)

June 23, 2016, 1:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.

This is a perfect addition to any aspiring artist's portfolio! Create an original drawing, engrave a styrene plate, and use a printing press to make multiple works of art during this four-hour workshop.

Page Masters (Grades 3, 4, & 5)

June 28-30, 2016, 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.

Become masters of the page by creating a book from start to finish during this three-day class. Become author, illustrator, and book-binder of a creative story while learning about the Stark Museum of Art's collection of rare books and manuscripts.

Where the Wild Things Art Class (Grades K, 1, & 2)

July 12-14, 2016, 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.

This summer, let the wild rumpus start with art! Become Kings and Queens of wild art things during this three-day class. Explore making mixed media works of art; wet paint and colorful wire to cool collages, there's no telling what great art materials these students will romp around it!

FUNctional Art Class (Grades 3, 4, & 5)

July 19-21, 2016, 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.

Make art with a purpose! This summer, make art that "works" in a myriad of ways; explore how instruments, weaving, and even simple machines become fine art. It's all about the process in this three-day class!

Screen Printing Teen Workshop (Grades 9, 10, 11, & 12)

July 28, 2016, 1:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.

In this workshop, students will be able to draw, cut, and pull their own stenciled prints. Print on

t-shirts, bags, or any other cloth item.

Draw Your Art Out! Class (Grades K, 1, & 2)

August 9-11, 2016, 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.

Determined to draw this summer? Learn how to draw objects from surroundings and use fun new materials! Discover doodling do-das like conte crayon, charcoal, ink, and other exciting supplies during this three-day class.
