Tropical Update

Last updated 8/25/2016 at Noon

The National Weather Service is continuing to monitor a weak, broad low pressure system called Invest 99L north of the Dominican Republic. NHC is giving this system a medium (40%) chance of developing by Saturday, and a high (70%) chance of developing this weekend in the Bahamas or close to Florida. Because this system is not well-defined, weather models are having a difficult time initializing, and produce large discrepancies in the forecast scenarios. Stay tuned for updates each day as we continue to monitor the situation.

As for our local weather, we are expecting scattered showers and thunderstorms each day through early next week. As much as 1 to 4 inches of rain is possible, especially along and south of the I-10 corridor of southeast Texas and southwest and south central Louisiana. If heavy rain falls over areas that are still dealing with drainage problems from the heavy rains of 2 weekends ago, we will be issuing flash flood warnings for those areas. A drier trend could happen by the middle of next week.

Tides will be running above normal next week, so that will bring minor coastal flooding during periods of high tide. However, it will also hinder the large-scale drainage that is still ongoing from the Mermentau and Vermilion River basins. Parts of eastern Cameron, Vermilion, Iberia, southern Jeff Davis, southern Acadia, Lafayette and St. Martin Parishes will remain vulnerable due to the high water.
