Beauchamp wins commissioner recount by two votes

Theresa Beauchamp took another step toward following her mother's historic path Monday when she prevailed by a two-vote -- 1,038-1,036 -- recount margin to defeat incumbent Barry Burton in the Republican primary for the Orange County Precinct 2 Commissioner's seat.

Beauchamp's mother, Marcelle Adams, made history in 1986 when she became the county's first female commissioner. The winner of the Nov. 6 general election between Beauchamp and Democrat Deborah Mitchell will become only the second female to be part of the five-member Commissioners' Court for Orange County.

Monday's recount was requested and paid for by Burton after he came up four votes short -- 1,038-1,034 -- in last Tuesday's primary.

Four election clerks not from Precinct 2, which runs vertically through the middle of the county, assisted County Elections Administrator Tina Barrow in the manual recount of the eight ballot boxes. County Republican Party David Covey was present, along with the candidates and one hand-picked representative.
