The Walmart in Bridge City is getting a long awaited makeover.

Robert Sullivan, manager of the Walmart in Bridge City, said new concrete floors and some ceiling tiles are being added, the electronics department revamped, the garden center updated and a larger selection of apparel. In addition to the new flooring fresh paint is going on the walls, new wall shelving changed out and self checkout lanes installed to complement with traditional checkout lanes.

Sullivan said the store will have a modernized entrance, be ADA compliant and the employee break room will be modernized as well as the restrooms being refreshed.

Unfortunately, additional grocery space won't be installed.

"This is a step forward," he said. "This is a significant investment. The company wouldn't had spend this much if they were going to close it."

Walmart today announced it expects to spend an estimated $277 million over the next year in Texas through the opening and remodeling of 49 stores as well as the rollout of several in-store and online innovations designed to help busy customers save time and money, according to a company press release. The spend is part of Walmart’s total capital expenditures guidance of $11 billion for Fiscal Year 2019, which was outlined last October at the company’s annual meeting for the investment community and reiterated in February 2018.

Walmart recently reported strong comp sales growth of 2.1 percent for the fiscal year ending Jan. 31, 2018, indicating customers are responding well to the company’s business strategy. The plan is to continue improving stores and accelerating innovation during the coming year to make shopping faster and easier for customers in Texas.

"Our 2018 plans are incredibly exciting for our customers because shopping will be that much quicker and more convenient,” said Greater Houston Regional General Manager Nick Berkeley. “Through new shopping innovations and fresh store remodels, we are building on the momentum we have in Greater Houston to exceed customer expectations.”
