Work crews weld rebar Tuesday night on Texas Avenue near Bridge City High School. Repairs to the base and overlaying with asphalt started a year ago. The estimated completion date is at the end of the year.

Construction begun on Texas Avenue in Bridge City a year ago. A month before Tropical Storm Harvey hit. Not the best of starts.

Work, however, continued throughout the year with a completion date targeted for the winter, according to Sarah Dupre, public information officer for the Texas Department of Transportation.

She said crews are repairing the base overlaying the roadway with asphalt for the $5.6 million project. Funding for the project is from TxDOT. Old Castle Materials of Beaumont is the contractor. Crews have been doing the work at night.

"It's 65 percent complete. It will be completed by the end of the year," she said. "They started in July 2017 and they have not used up all of their days. They're assigned so many days under contract."

Thus far, Texas Avenue has been paved from Ferry Drive, eastward to Roundbunch Road. From there, the road should be paved to FM 62.

Some other big projects in Orange County is reconstructing Interstate 10 and widening it to start in 2020.
