Gunter named to take over as constable

Orange County Commissioners voted to accept the resignation of Precinct 2 Constable Mark Jones, effective June 1, and named Jeremiah Gunter his replacement.

Jones did not stand for re-election and Gunter was the only candidate for the job to run in March's primaries.

Also, commissioners voted extend the county's disaster declaration for the coronavirus pandemic for another 30 days – through June 9 – at Tuesday's bi-monthly meeting.

The purpose for maintaining the declaration is to be eligible for reimbursements on disaster-related expenses from the state and federal governments.

At the same time, the court declared that Saturday, May 16 would mark the end of no fees being charged at the county landfill.

A new position, titled "Grant Coordinator," was created for an annual sum of $44,200 was created to help the county keep up with paperwork connected to federal, state and private grants.

The county leaders approved $20,942 to pay bills dated May 5 and $469,427 for bills dated May 12.

The county acknowledged receipt of $504,251 in sales tax receipts from the state for March and a total of $265,218 received from April 2020 property tax collection.
