With Hurricane Season here again, Bridge City Mayor David Rutledge has been leading the push for citizens to sign up with STAN.

That’s the Southeast Texas Alerting Network and it serves Orange, Jefferson and Hardin Counties.

“We’ve been in it for a while,” Rutledge said. “We’re just making a concerted effort to make sure everybody knows about it.

“With Hurricane Season coming on, we’re making an extra push to be durn sure everybody stays informed.”

STAN is a messaging and notification system that keeps communities in Southeast Texas informed about emergencies and other important events in the area.

County Emergency Management teams have joined with the Industry of Southeast Texas, the Southeast Texas Regional Planning Commission and local media.

More information is available online and instructions to register a cell phone for notifications can be found at www.thestan.com .

“It’s a really good service that has good safety information for everyone,” Rutledge said. “It’s also convenient if there’s a water break in just one area. We can contact just the people who are affected by it.

“When we need to get a message out, we can tailor it to whatever the need is. If Orange County sends out something that affects Bridge City, it will go to the folks in Bridge City.

“We won’t notify them every time there’s a fire in town, but if the Veterans Bridge is going to close because of ice, that we will send out.”

STAN delivers emergency messages to the residential and commercial telephones in affected areas. It delivers emergency messages to registered cell phones via phone, text or email.

The beauty of STAN is that it will call you at home or on your cell if you’re away from home so you’ll know if something serious threatens your neighborhood.

You can also call 1-877-THE-STAN (1-877-843-7826) toll-free, anytime, to receive updates regarding emergencies, plant operations, traffic and weather information or other outreach from emergency management.

All notifications STAN sends to the public are posted on the STAN line. You can also read the most current postings on the STAN website at www.thestan.com .
