Games This Weekend

WEST ORANGE-STARK over BRIDGE CITY—Hopefully this game won’t be a battle for the District 9-4A cellar, but at this time in the season in previous decades, the Mustangs fans would be guessing which fourth-place team they would be up against in the first round of the state playoffs. But with this new regime in place, the biggest worry for the Mustangs and their loyal fans is merely making the playoffs—even as the No. 4 seed. A win Friday night should ease their minds, somewhat.

LIVINGSTON over LITTLE CYPRESS-MAURICEVILLE---The Battlin’ Bears had better realize this trip may be different than in previous years and they should be ready for a high-scoring, very talented team that whipped up on a good Huffman team last week by the tune of 69-34. I look for a high-scoring affair with LCM having a good chance to pull off the upset.

ORANGEFIELD over HARDIN---The Bobcats are really rolling with a high-octane offense plus a rock-ribbed defense that blanked Tarkington 46-0 in their Homecoming game last week to maintain their undefeated (3-0) status atop District 10-3A. This is a road game but that shouldn’t make a hill of beans to these high-scoring ‘Cats.

VIDOR over LUMBERTON---The Raiders continue to turn heads with the progress they’ve made over the last couple of years. But the Pirates are out to defend their district title and will do it with one of their best performances of the season.

DEWEYVILLE over COLMESNEIL---The Pirates’ opponent this week is fighting mad about the 68-12 trouncing they got from Lovelady last week. The Pirates beat a tough Evadale team 40-30 and should rack up another win Friday night.

McNEESE STATE over TEXAS A&M COMMERCE—The Cowboys have had two weeks to prepare for this game and heal those bumps and bruises. It’s also a home game, but the visitors are fresh off a 31-28 upset of first-place Southeastern Louisiana last week and should be pumped-up for the Pokes.

HIGH SCHOOL—Houston C.E. King over Beaumont United, Galena Park North Shore over Beaumont West Brook, Port Arthur Memorial over Baytown Goose Creek Memorial, Fort Bend Marshall over Nederland, Port Neches-Groves over Dayton, Hamshire-Fannett over Hardin-Jefferson, Silsbee over Liberty, Huffman over Splendora, Newton over Trinity, Warren over Anderson-Shiro, Woodville over Huntington, East Chambers over Anahuac, Kirbyville over Tarkington, Evadale over Sabine Pass, Burkeville over Leverette’s Chapel, Chester over Cristo Rey Jesuit, High Island over Bracket Christian, Lutheran South over Beaumont Kelly, Allen Academy over Beaumont Legacy Christian.

Fresno State over San Jose State, Alabama A&M over Arkansas-Pine Bluff, Southern over Alcorn State, Sam Houston State over Eastern Kentucky, Florida A&M over Grambling State, Northwestern State over Houston Baptist, Incarnate Word over Nicholls State, Villanova over Richmond, Stephen F. Austin over Tarleton State (all Saturday); Nevada over Hawaii (Sunday)
