WORLD SERIES-PHILLIES HOST ASTROS

Rain forced World Series game 3 to be moved from Monday to Tuesday. Two games will follow on Wednesday and Thursday in Philadelphia. If the series doesn’t end there, game 6 and 7 will be played in Houston Saturday and Sunday. All games between the Astros and Phillies start at 7:03 p.m. and are televised on FOX. The Astros blew a five run lead in game one in a 6-5 loss but came back to win the second game 5-2. The teams were tied going into game three. Not knowing the outcome of Tuesday’s game, I’m still picking the Astros to win the series in seven games.*****I have to move on; come along it won’t do you no harm.

SAD STATE OF OUR NATION

Paul Pelosi, the 82-year-old husband of Nancy Pelosi, was struck with a hammer inside his own home by a man who entered through the back door looking for the speaker of the House. The alleged attacker, David DePape, has several online posts to his name, sharing and discussing extreme right-wing conspiracy theories. Threats against law-makers have more than doubled since 2017. Now, even as Pelosi lies in a hospital bed recovering from surgery after a skull fracture, several Republican politicians have felt it appropriate to joke about the incident or promote unfounded conspiracy theories about it. Rep. Clay Higgins, R-La., posted a tweet referencing a baseless theory that Paul Pelosi had invited DePape to his home to have sex with him. Texas senator Ted Cruz, who at first rightly condemned the incident as “horrific” and wrote “violence is always wrong and unacceptable” in a tweet, later returned to Twitter to boost some of the same misinformation. Keri Lake, GOP’S Arizona gubernatorial candidate, joked about the attack in a campaign speech.

COUNTY TURNS REPUBLICAN

The voters in Orange County are to be complimented for a record turnout. Even though our votes didn’t play in the national election outcome, Obama was reelected. The voters exercised their right. In local races, there were five contested races. Republican Mandy White Rogers beat Democratic Mike Abbott for the unexpired term for County-Court-at-Law. In Pct. 1, commissioners court race, incumbent Republican David Dubose was re-elected over former commissioner James Stringer. For commissioner of Pct. 3, incumbent commissioner, Democrat John Dubose was defeated by Republican John Bankin, in what apparently was straight party voters voting for Mitt Romney. Dubose will complete 12 years as county commissioner on Dec. 31. Also it’s believed that the county, borrowing $6 million in the last weeks of the campaign might have been a problem for Dubose. In the constable race, incumbent Republican Chris Humble was reelected. In the open seat for constable Pct. 2, Republican David Cagle won. All four Orange County constables come January will be Republicans. Commissioners Court will now have three Republicans. Orange County voted strongly for Republican Mitt Romney in the national election. Down ballot races benefited by his coat tails. Well, that’s an early report based only on early votes. In the Dist. 36 congressional district, it appears that Republican Steve Stockman will win big. He is from the Houston area and will replace Con. Kevin Brady as our congressman. Brady was elected in another district.*****Judge Pat will miss the bench for more ways than one. The longtime judge has enjoyed the work. Judge Pat is a fine judge who loves the law and is dedicated to administrating it in a fair and impartial manner. Since stepping down as district judge and assuming the unexpired term in county-court-at- law, he knew the judgeship was just temporary but he will be leaving sooner than most expected. Mandy White Rogers, winner of the special county court at law election, has confirmed that she will assume the post as soon as possible. Her target date is Nov. 16 or shortly after. *****Our thoughts today go out to Charlotte Hamilton and her family. Everyone who knows pretty Charlotte is aware of how upbeat she always has been. Her gospel music was beautiful. Well, our friend, Ms. Charlotte, needs all our prayers. She‘s in a tough battle with cancer.*****Misty Songe, who is area manager for Verizon. The company has recently opened a new store in Bridge City at the former Nick’s Pharmacy location. Verizon has three other area locations. She looks forward to meeting many of the citizens. (Editor’s Note: Today, Misty is mayor of Vidor.) *****Longtime CBS news anchor, Dan Rather, turned 81 on Halloween. We remember Dan at age 26 breaking in to the national scene while covering Hurricane Carla for a Houston television station. He is still around and does TV shows and guest appearances on different networks. He is a Texas native and has a ranch in the Hill Country.*****Wade Phillips’ Texan defense shut down the Buffalo Bills in a 21-9 win, allowing only three field goals.*****Matt Bryant and the Atlanta Falcons put it on the Dallas Cowboys in a 19-13 win. Matt made four field goals; however, he did miss two wide right, a 37 yarder and a 43 yarder. Atlanta is the NFL’s only undefeated team at 8-0. Both Phillips and Bryant are Orange County natives.

Orange County Commissioner Owen Burton opens new office in Mauriceville. An open house will be held Nov. 12. Miss Nelda, the Commissioner’s wife, will answer the phones at the new office.*****County Commissioner John Dubose is honored with the esteemed “Texas Court House Community Award.”*****Female boxing pro Valerie Mahfood trains in Bridge City for upcoming fight with Laila Ali, daughter of Mohammed Ali.*****Bridge City Chamber selects longtime insurance agent Bill Nickum as Christmas parade marshal. The parade to be held on Nov. 22. *****Bridge City water tower gets a new make over. *****Funeral services were held Nov. 5 for Doris Ellen Sanders, age 70, who died Nov. 2. A resident of Orange since 1957, she was a teacher for West Orange-Cove School District for 33 years. She is survived by husband Lynwood, daughter Ann Gray, sons Alan, Jim, Steven and their families. *****The Record’s players of the week are Ryan Crouch, WO-S, Luke Lyons, BC, John Modica, OF, Donald Tardy, LCM.*****West Orange-Stark surprised Port Neches-Groves with a 21-20 win.*****Sims Elementary first graders Katelyn Potter and Skylar Kahia capitalized on the warm, early November weather with a lemonade stand. The girls used lemons the size of grapefruit grown at Skylar’s home on Norbert St. in Bridge City. *****Mary Bryant underwent triple bypass surgery at Park Place Hospital. Son Matt Bryant, kicker for the New York Giants, flew home to be with his mom. Matt attended the Bridge City-Buna football game Friday, flew back to New York Saturday for Sunday’s game.*****The Montagne family ventured to College Station to celebrate Johnny Montagne Jr.’s birthday. Sen. Lyndon B. Johnson speaks in Orange. Gayle Shaddock was one Orangeite to get his autograph.*****Dr. Ernest E. Lewis was appointed superintendent of the DuPont Sabine River film plant. *****Signs about town indicate that Arthur Simpson will oppose Commissioner Casey J. Peveto. *****Port Arthur Tigers in 26-14 duel. Clark Wood was named outstanding defensive player for the Tigers.*****Wayne Brint, Bridge City’s 192-pound quarterback, scored three touchdowns and passed for a fourth one to guide the Cardinals to a 28-0 victory over East Chambers. He gained 120 yards rushing and passed for 169. He is Orange County’s top passer. *****Baylor defeats Aggies 13-0. The passing of Bobby Ply and the running of Ronnie Bull was too much for the Aggies. Gordon LeBoeuf, the smashing Aggie fullback, fumbled on the five to stop an Aggie drive. Ply completed 13 passes in 13 attempts. A&M out-gained Baylor in first downs and total yardage. *****Wallace High Dragons defeat LaMarque 20-8. Quarterback Earl Sonnier, halfbacks Earl Melebeck and Charles Ware were too much offense punch for LaMarque. linebacker Eddie Cartwright, tackle Antonio Bourgois, guard Whitney Mouton and center, James Guillory, gave stalwart performances in the line.

DOLLY LEAVES THE ROAD

Dolly Parton, age 75, won’t be working on the road anymore. The 10-time Grammy winning country music icon confirmed the end of her touring career. “I do not think I will ever tour again, but I do know I’ll do special shows here and there, and now and then,” Parton said. “Maybe do a long weekend of shows, or just a few shows at a festival. I have no intention of going on a full-blown tour anymore.” On Nov. 5, the “Best Little Whorehouse in Texas” star will be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame alongside Carly Simon, Eminem, Lionel Richie and more.

A FEW HAPPENINGS

Halloween, Astros, and elections, oh my. What a season for activities. And now the Christmas music begins and the holidays rush on by. The World Series gets later with the years, but who cares if the Astros are there. Some Halloween parties got changed to World Series parties and then changed back on All Hallow's Eve because of the game being rained out. Out in Bridge City, the Sylvan Glades and Schofield Estates subdivisions teamed up for quite the extravaganza. Over in downtown Orange, the police department, fire department, library, and First United Methodist Church all handed out candy on Monday evening. Several hundred came by. Our sympathies to the parents trying to get sugar-high kids to bed and hoping the kiddos didn't count all the Reese's. Even more sympathies to the teachers who had to face sleep-deprived, kids who are still on a sugar high and trying to trade candy during class. And to all the kids--wasn't it all wonderful.*****Local fans were disappointed in the Astros loss on Friday, especially Della Gallien. Her daughter, Rita Monson, drove her to Houston so son (and brother) Richard Bonnin could escort his mother to a real World Series Game. It was a thrilling game, but not so much for Houston fans. The next night's attendees included Gail and Steve Maddox, who got to see a W.*****Locally, you can bet that Donna Black won't let her terrier mix pup Maggie miss a 'Stros game on TV. Maggie watches closely and jumps and runs for homeruns. She even has an Astros jersey.*****The politicians were sighted around the county, but mainly for the other politicians. Republican State Representative Dade Phelan, who is running unopposed for District 21 and is hoping to retain his job as Speaker of the House, was at High Tides mingling with Orange County Commissioners Robert Viator and Johnny Trahan, along with Sheila Faske, who sits on the board for the Texas State University System. Phelan later met with some officials from Orange County cities. Republican Lt. Governor Dan Patrick ate lunch with some locals at Old Orange Cafe.*****The Blue Man Group returned to the Lutcher Theater and brought their unique light show of tricks before a packed house.  The Blue Man Group prepares different shows and the one here this time featured a lot of drumming, plus paint splattering. People sitting in the front two rows were provided plastic coats with hoods. Stark Foundation President Tad McKee was chosen to be the audience target of a large balloon filled with paint. But at the last minute, the "trick" got distracted. We'll never know if the Blue Man who was holding the target got a secret earphone message "Not him."  People in the crowd included Sally and Josh Peveto, along with daughters Ryleigh and Kyndahl. They were celebrating Josh's 41st birthday a day early. Gina and Skipper Yeaman even made it and Gina, a WOS Mustang superfan and school board trustee loved all the blue. Michael Cole was enjoying and writing about the event. La Toya Overstreet also made it. Sighted were Carly Thibodeaux, Kathleen Hughes, Wendy Elliott, plus Paulette and Joe Howington.*****Paul Denosowicz had a double celebration this past week with a birthday and then 51st anniversary with wife, Sue.***Melissa Anne Rushing with husband, Elvis, enjoyed a birthday celebration dinner cruise.***Drew Tran has one more year of being a teenager now that he's turned 19.***Marvin Edwards will be hitting his sixties next year and plans to enjoy his last year in the fifties.***Jody Chesson turned 39 again this week. It was his real birthday on Sunday, though it seems like he's celebrating every day.***Kay Wallace and D.D. Terry were two celebrating their birthdays on Halloween. D.D was out of town, but wife Lucy of Lucy's Cafe, took time to dress as Frida Kahlo and had a Mexican-style trick-or-treat.***Mark Dunn celebrated his birthday on Halloween and was delighted to hear from his two daughters Amber and Jenna and their six children who were all together in Vero Beach. They called to wish him happy birthday.***Ron Sigler celebrated his birthday but haven't heard if Waffle House stuck candles in his raisin toast. He recently walked another daughter down the aisle. But honors for the top Father of the Bride this week go to Tony Dallas, who got to escort daughter Leigh Anne as she married Brodrick Harrell. There wasn't a dry eye in the room.*****We're glad to hear Lyndia Permenter, former First Lady of Pinehurst, is feeling better and back home.*****The Record Newspapers were hit with a double whammy this past week. Founder Roy Dunn underwent test to determine if stents were necessary and his son, Mark, who is production manager and handles most newspaper duties, had hip replacement surgery. On Tuesday Mark was working on production of the paper while getting acquainted with his new hip. That was his second hip replacement. Roy has been down with a Sciatica nerve problem, he says “if you haven’t had it, you don’t want it, it hurts.” Janelle is still wearing a back brace for a fractured bone in her back. Thankfully they are recuperating.*****The Record’s Margaret Toal furnished the Beaumont Enterprise the history of Orange County cemeteries for a Sunday feature story. Margaret is one of our better historians.

Wen winter time came, dey learn it cost too much to feed and board dem two horses. Sostan suggest dey turn dem out to pasture until spring. “How we gonna tell you horse from my horse when we pick dem up, hanh?” Clovis axe. “Dat’s easy,” say Sostan, “We can cut da mane on my horse and da tail on yours.” Wen spring came da horses dem had grown back their tail and mane. Clovis axe, “Wat we gonna do now smart ass?” “No problem,” said Sostan “Why don’t you just take da black one and me, I’ll take da white one.”

C’EST TOUT

FROM THE MAIL BOX

In the last couple of weeks I received a few letters and now, because of space, I will attempt to answer one. Paul wanted to know why I thought former President Trump took the confidential documents. He had to be aware that it was unlawful to remove records from the White House that belonged to the government. Well, here’s my take. I don’t really know why he would take them, he was advised not to. I believe his sick ego, probably thought he could get by with it because no one would want to confront him over it. I’ve now come to the conclusion of why he really took those valuable documents. His son Eric has said on several occasions that his father’s favorite color is green and in every undertaking he considers how much of it is green. Trump’s other son, Don Jr., often says that his father’s absolute bottom line is about how much money is in it. He has no other bottom line. I recalled that a little over five years ago Mark Cuban predicted that the Trump organization would be bankrupt in seven years. That’s less than two years away. Trump’s legal bills keep piling up and he has been raising millions of dollars from supporters who believe he will run for president. Once he announces for sure, that “Cash Cow” will dry up. If not, he gets to keep the millions he is raising. I believe he saw a lot of green in those confidential documents. They were his insurance policy against bankruptcy, possibly worth billions in the right circles. Some day he would cash in. He justified taking the documents and lying about them by claiming they were his. He committed a crime that carries jail time. Any of us would not get away with that but Donald Trump, over the years, has beaten the rap. In his mind there was so much to gain that it was worth the gamble if he got away with it. I don’t believe he will ever serve time, maybe pay a big fine, but the noose around his neck is a felony charge that will stick. He’ll be done and will never be able to run for public office.
