Orangefield captures Area Championship

The Orangefield Bobcats continued to roll in the post season and moved into the third round of the Class 3A state baseball playoffs. The Bobcats swept Wallis Brazos in two games outscoring the Cougars 27-0 in the series.

The series was played at Crosby a neutral site for the two teams. The first game was Thursday, May 11, which Orangefield won 10-0 giving Coach Tim Erickson his 200th career win.

Pitcher Jason Bodin was masterful in the game. Bodin got credit for a complete game throwing six innings, allowing three hits, walking one, and striking out 12 Cougars in the win.

The Bobcats scored four runs in the fifth inning to bolster their lead over Brazos. Caleb Fregia and Matthew Johnson had the big hits driving in runs during the rally for Orangefield.

The Bobcats totaled eleven hits and stole six bases in the game. Bodin and Fregia led with two hits apiece while Kane Smith stole two bases.

On Friday, May 13, Orangefield finished the deal blasting Wallis Brazos 17-0. The game lasted only four innings when the 15-run rule was invoked.

Thirteen runs in the third inning blew the game wide open for the Bobcats. Caleb Fregia and Jason Bodin blasted triples while Kyle Michael and Logan Cheek chipped in with doubles during the big rally.

Bodin went three for three for Orangefield including two hits in the big third inning. Jason drove in five runs for the Bobcats.

Three pitchers for Orangefield combined to throw the abbreviated shutout. Morgan Sampson got the win throwing three and a third innings allowing one hit and striking out five. Colton Myers and Kaleb Menard closed out the game with Menard striking out the final Cougar batter to finish the victory.

In the third round of the post season Orangefield will play the Central Heights Blue Devils out of Nacogdoches. The Bobcats enter the series with a record of 27-4 while the Blue Devils are 28-4 on their season.

The best of three series will be played in Jasper with Game 1 on Thursday, May 18, at 7:00 PM and Game 2 on Saturday, May 20, beginning at 4:00 PM. If necessary a third game will follow the second game.
