Orangefield Superintendent Dr. Shaun McAlpin introduced Bryan Whitmire as the new boys basketball coach to those attending the meeting of school trustees on Monday

The Orangefield School Trustees introduced the new high school boys basketball coach during their meeting on Monday, May 22, at the high school. Bryan Whitmire was approved to take the position as the boys basketball coach by the school board earlier in May.

Whitmire comes to Orangefield from The Woodlands High School in Class 6A. He was an assistant coach on the varsity last season and the head coach of the freshman team which won the district championship with a 25-2 record.

During last season Whitmire worked with the varsity basketball team in charge of offensive preparation, schemes, game planning, and play calling. The result was the varsity scoring average at The Woodlands increased by eight points per game over the previous season with Whitmire's help.

Prior to coming to The Woodlands, Whitmire coached at Buna High School beginning in 2008 and became the head coach of the Cougar varsity basketball team in 2009. Whitmire took a losing program at Buna when he arrived to making eight straight playoff appearances, advancing to the regional quarterfinals three times, and totaling 200 wins as a varsity coach.

Orangefield Superintendent Dr. Shaun McAlpin happily presented Whitmire as the new head basketball coach to the dozens of people attending the school board meeting. "He has an exceptional record not only working with Buna, but all around when it comes to basketball. We're excited to have him, I think he's going to be a great member of our Bobcat team," McAlpin commented.

Coach Whitmire thanked the school board and the superintendent for their approval saying he was excited to come to Orangefield. Whitmire replied, "I appreciate everything, everybody's been great so far, it's been a great experience. I'm really excited to get started, I'm looking forward to get rolling around the summer, and I'm looking forward to next year."

Whitmire replaces Jake McDonald as the boys head basketball coach at Orangefield. McDonald served as the Bobcats' basketball coach for six seasons, making the playoffs five times, reaching the third round of the playoffs twice, and winning 133 games. McDonald announced in April he was taking the position of head basketball coach at Montgomery High School which is in Class 5A.
