James Ray Thurman, 80, Hemphill

James Ray Thurman, 80, passed away on October 13, 2023 in Hemphill, Tx.

A private family memorial gathering will be held on Wednesday, October 18th at his home on Toledo Bend.  The service will be conducted by his nephew, Charles “Bubba” Thurman.

Born in Summerfield, Louisiana on December 28, 1942, he was the son of Henry Grady Thurman and Thelma (Linder) Thurman.  James retired from E.I. DuPont after almost 40 years of service.  He led a very full life and always let his family and friends know that he loved them.  He and his wife Gail enjoyed traveling to Alaska to visit friends.  He enjoyed hunting and fishing with family and friends, especially “The Annual Thurman Hunt” in the Texas Hill Country.  He loved sweets, watching old westerns, and being with his family.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Grady and Thelma Thurman.

He is survived by his wife, Gayla “Gail” (Prewitt) Thurman; children, Jan Thurman of Lake Charles, Ray Thurman of Bridge City, and Jimmy Thurman and wife Misty of Beaumont; grandchildren, Jesse Thurman, Taylor McDonald and husband Jake, Brayden Thurman, and Libby Thurman; sister, Glen Lummus and husband Sanford of Orange, and brother, Charles “Butch” Thurman and wife Jackie of Bridge City; and numerous nephews, nieces, and other loving family and friends.

Cremation arrangements were handled by Starr Funeral Home, Hemphill, Texas.
