Girls Basketball Teams Start District

Keylie Washburn scored 26 points and was the leading rebounder for the Lady Bears as LCM defeated West Orange-Stark in the district opener

The local girls basketball teams began playing their district games this month. Bridge City, Little Cypress Mauriceville, and West Orange-Stark all compete in District 19-4A which played their opening games this past Friday.

The Little Cypress Mauriceville Lady Bears opened district play on the road against the West Orange-Stark Lady Mustangs. The Lady Bears won the game 46-21 and never trailed after scoring the first points.

The Lady Mustangs stayed close pulling to within a point 10-9 in the second quarter. Then LCM went on a six point run at that point to pull away. The Lady Bear lead was 26-11 late in the second quarter, and they were never really threatened after that.

Keylie Washburn led the Lady Bears with 26 points, and she dominated the boards. Mallory Russell, Lucia Lopes-Montoto, and Doniya Sibley each hit three point baskets for Little Cypress Mauriceville. LCM Coach Eddie Michalko complimented his Lady Bears for playing solid defense all night.

The Bridge City Lady Cardinals also started district with an impressive road win. The Lady Cardinals beat the Jasper Lady Dogs 55-19 to go 1-0 in district.

A huge first quarter set the tone for Bridge City on the night. In the last ninety seconds of the first period the Lady Cardinals got a fast break basket from Kaylee Britten, Whitney Cunningham hit a three, and Kailey Nelson made a layup to help them take a 19-5 lead.

Kennedy Campbell got 16 points for the Lady Cardinals in Bridge City's win over Jasper to start district

Leading 30-9 at the half Bridge City really blew the game open in the third quarter outscoring Jasper 21-6 to open up a 36 point lead. Kennedy Campbell scored ten points in the period including a three, Rylynn Thornton tallied seven points, while Nicole Sasser made two steals that led to layups for her.

Kennedy Campbell was Bridge City's leading scorer with 16 points followed by Rylynn Thornton who had 10 points. Kaylee Britten, Whitney Cunningham, and Nicole Sasser each had 7 points. Kailey Nelson topped the Lady Cardinals with 6 rebounds and Abigail Janckila was right behind with 5 boards. The Bridge City defense was tight making 37 steals led by Britten who had a dozen take aways.

Bridge City hosted West Orange-Stark on Tuesday. Silsbee played at Little Cypress Mauriceville on Tuesday and will be at Bridge City on Friday. West Orange-Stark plays again on Friday at Vidor. Little Cypress Mauriceville plays its next district game on Tuesday, January 2, at home against Bridge City.
