People who like to sing in the shower or dance in the bedroom will have a chance to appear on the stage of the Lutcher Theater. The Service League of Orange is seeking talented, and even not-so-talented, local performers for the 2008 Silk Stocking Review Follies, a variety show.

Though the Follies is a time for fun and entertainment, the purpose is serious. The Service League raises money through the Follies for a variety of charitable projects, including many to help local children.

The Follies has been held for more than half a century every three years.

This year, the Talent Party to kick-off the month-long activities will be held Tuesday, Feb. 12, from 7 to 10 p.m. at the VFW Hall on Texas 87. Tickets are $5 each and available at the door.

Then, on Wednesday, Feb. 13, the auditions for roles in the Follies will be held from 6 to 10 p.m. at the Salvation Army headquarters on Martin Luther King Jr. Drive. The auditions are open to everyone.

“If you want to be in it, come on,” said Service League spokesman Kelly Morphew.

The Follies feature singing, dancing and acting in skits.

Besides performers, the Service League will also need volunteers to work behind the scenes, helping with costumes, scenery and other jobs needed to put on a show.

Kevin and Brooke Doss of Orange will direct the Follies this year, rather than an out-of-town production company. The two are veteran performers and have appeared, or directed, a number of productions at Orange Community Players. Kevin Doss is the speech-drama instructor at Lamar State College-Orange, while Brooke Doss is a high school drama teacher.

The Follies will be held this year on Friday, Feb. 29, and Saturday, March 1, at the Lutcher Theater. Reserved tickets are $20 and balcony tickets are $10. Tickets are available through Service League members or at the gift shop at Memorial Hermann Baptist Hospital-Orange, which is operated by the Service League. The gift shop is open from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Morphew said the Service League this year is saving money by not hiring an out-of-town director, so door prizes will be given away each night to ticket-holders in the audience.

Also, local businesses purchase sponsorships, with some acting or performing their commercials as part of the show. A sponsor party will be held Feb. 16.
