Bridge City will get back on track this week as they travel to Hamshire

Fannett on Friday to take on the Longhorns. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. The Longhorns are 1-7 for the season with three straight losses in Dist. 21-3A.

The Cardinals were defeated last week, not because of a bad effort, but because of the excellent game played by the WO-S Mustangs. The Mustangs gave the Cardinals their second loss of the year, along with their first district loss, with a convincing win of 28-0. The game went quickly as the Mustangs controlled the ball and the clock with the ground game.

The first quarter ticked away as both teams turned the ball over on downs.

West Orange’s second drive started in the first quarter, and ended with the first play of the second quarter.

It was a one yard touchdown run by QB Jimmy Salter.

Bryce Crew’s point after made the score 7-0 with 11:58 left in the half.

The Mustangs added to their lead on their next drive after a Cardinal punt.

Britton Lindsey scored on a ten yard run, capping off a sixty-two yard drive.

Crew’s kick made it 14-0 with 9:48 left to play in the half.

Bridge City started their next drive at the thirty-one yard line and looked like they were going to put together a good drive.

Matt Menard went up the middle for fifteen yards, followed by a pass interference call.

But Menard’s next pass went off the receiver’s hand, and was intercepted by the Mustangs.

Tanner Cervanka returned the favor by intercepting Salter’s pass in the end zone to stop a Mustang threat.

The next two drives ended up in turnovers as well before the half.

The Mustang chain gang defense sacked Menard causing the ball to pop loose, where they took over on the thirty-eight yard line.

The final WO-S drive of the half was halted by a Mitchel Hubbard interception.

They took off to the break with the score 14-0 in favor of the Stangs.

Bridge City received the ball first in the third quarter but were forced to punt. The Mustangs started their first drive at the twenty-two yard line. Tyler Roberts sparked the Cardinals by picking off a Salter pass and returning it fifty-eight yards. The Cardinals ensuing drive started on the sixteen yard line, but that was where the drive ended with WO-S forcing a turnover on downs. The third quarter ended with West Orange driving the ball with the same score 14-0.

With 11:17 left in the game Collin Janice took the handoff and ran for a twenty-one yard touchdown extending their lead to 21-0 after Crew’s extra point. On the Cardinals’ next drive, Hunter Clark made a nice run of forty-eight yards, taking the ball to the Mustang sixteen yard line. The Mustang defense stepped up once again, and forced a turnover on downs. West Orange’s last touchdown of the game came with 3:13 left, set up by a fake punt that allowed the Stangs to keep the ball. Salter hit Mark Roberts with a twenty-six yard TD pass that brought us to our final score of 28-0, after Crew split the uprights with his kick.

Menard was four for 19 for 40 yards and one interception in the passing department. Clark had 11 carries for 65 yards, and Menard had 18 carries for 36 yards. Roberts had two catches for 19 yards, Keith Reed one catch for 13 yards, and Cameron Dishon one catch for eight yards.

We sure missed the band not being there, but for a good cause. They were performing in Nacogdoches for a chance to go to state. They put on a good performance as they always do, but fell a little short and did not advance. The cheerleaders worked overtime keeping the fans going, and how about those Strutters?

Bridge City will get back on track this week as they travel to Hamshire Fannett on Friday to take on the Longhorns. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m, hope to see you at the game.
