Vernie Mae Cornes

Vernie Mae Cornes, 97, of Merryville, LA., went to be with her Lord and Savior, Saturday, Nov. 16, while residing at Becky’s Private Home in Orange.

She was a native of Merryville, born April 17, 1916 to the late Laura Josephine (Cooley) and Andrew Jackson Jeans. She had lived in the Orange area 33 years, and 38 years in Merryville. She was a faithful and active member of Boxwood Church of Christ. Vernie enjoyed gardening and spending as much of her time fishing. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend who will be missed dearly.

She was preceded in death by her parents; son, Jack Edgar Cornes; grandson, Todd E. Cornes; siblings, Arthur Jeans, Lloyd Jeans, Letha Jarrell, Alder Jeans, Cilistine Jeans, Otis Jeans, Irene Evans, Vernon “Ted” Jeans, Bubba Jeans, Alvie Jeans, Delmar Jeans and infant brother.

She is survived by daughters, Melva Rae Byrd and husband, George of Orange, Mary Francis Groom and husband, Raymond of Town Bluff, TX., Brenda Gail LeBert of Orange; nine grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild.

Visitation will be held Monday, Nov. 18, from 4:00 pm until 9:00 pm at Boxwood Church of Christ. Funeral service will be held Tuesday, Nov. 19, at 2:00 pm at the church, with Travis Murray officiating. Burial will follow at The Meadows Cemetery in Merryville.

Honoring Mrs. Cornes as pallbearers will Ronnie LaChance, Jerry LaChance, Gary LaChance, Scott Cornes, Billy Cornes and Eddie LeBert. Honorary pallbearer is Toby LeBert.

The family would like to express a special thank you to Becky LeBleu, Genevia Herman, and staff, for the love and care given to our mother.
