Area schools participated in various Veterans Day activities this week.

Orangefield Junior High Students honored area veterans with a breakfast and memorial service.  Students invited veterans to the event, sponsored by O.J.H. Student Council and the Social Studies Department.

Little Cypress-Mauriceville High School’s annual Veteran’s Day ceremony took place at 11:11 a.m. on Wednesday. The flag bearers and students playing Taps were dressed in vintage military uniforms from the collection of LCM teacher, Bernard Perricone. Detective Mike Langley of the Orange County Sheriff’s Department was the featured speaker.

“It is easy for me to welcome you here today,” said Little Cypress Junior High Principal Keith Lindsey, of the veterans attending Wednesday’s breakfast in their honor at LCJH. “I appreciate and respect what you have done for us. You personify history for us,” he went on to say as he opened the school’s Veteran’s Day Ceremony.

Dozens of LCJH students and teachers brought parents and grandparents who have in the past or now are serving in the military. A video with pictures of the veterans in uniform and their service information was presented as part of the recognition.

West Orange – Stark High School students also gathered at their school to participate in a special program in honor of the day.

The program included recognition of veterans, as well a Veteran’s Day message from guest speaker, the Rev. Ronnie Crockett Sr.

Also included was a history of Veteran’s Day, the playing of “Taps,” and a special presentation regarding the folding of the American flag and the symbolism of each fold which was shared by Wayne and Justin Sparrow.

A reception, served by of the Culinary Arts Club, followed the event in the WO-S Career Center.

The event was sponsored by the West Orange – Stark High School Student Council and Texas Association of Future Educators (TAFE).

Veterans of Foreign War Post 2775 in Orange did not hold any events, but participated in those planned by other organizations.

Eight members of the post and five Ladies Auxiliary members attended many of the Orange area programs. John Clark participated in the WOS program and at St. Mary Catholic School, while Robert LaFleur was guest speaker at the Veterans Day Tribute at Oak Bluff Cemetery in Port Neches. Other members represented the post and auxiliary at Golden Triangle Park in Port Arthur, Orangefield High School and the Orangefield fourth graders’ program in honor of all veterans.
