LCI and LCE have won the 2012 Award for Excellence in Texas School Health – Award of Achievement. This honor is given to districts or schools that are implementing a current or planning a new program to improve the lifelong health of students, staff and the school community. LCI received the award for their Community Resource Walk and Blood Drive, which was held last spring.

The LCI/LCE Community Resource Walk and Blood Drive is a cooperative effort between the schools and the many different resources that provide services to Orange County.

The students are challenged to collect as many laps as they can by inviting their friends and families to come walk with them the day of the event.

They are also challenged to recruit as many blood donors they can after they learn for every pint that is donated three lives can be saved.

Lastly, the students are challenged to help their class meet their goal for the collection of donations based on the charity that they adopted (Orange Christian Services, Salvation Army, Little Cypress Lions Club, Service League of Orange, Red Cross, Garth House and Rainbow Room.)

The schools are challenged to invite as many resources as possible to set up booths at the event sharing information about they services. The Resources are charged with the responsibility of explaining what services they provide, how to access/qualify for those services and how the community can support them in continuing to provide for those services. Earlier this year they received a Congressional Letter of Commendation from Congressman Kevin Brady for the Walk.

The 2013 LCI/LCE Community Resource Walk and Blood Drive will be held on Friday, March 8, at Little Cypress Intermediate School. The goals for this year are 1,500 participants, 100 pints of blood, for all classes to meet their donation goals and to have 70 different resources participate. The community is invited to participate by dropping off donations at Granger Chevrolet the “Community Donation Station” from Feb. 22 through March 8.

LCI and LCE School Nurses, Kelly Meadows and Shari Lyon are coordinators for the event.
